(E) Extrovert or (I) Introvert?
Part I

E or I? How do you prefer to interact with the world and where do you direct your energy? Carl Jung developed a theory on personality traits to determine how we energize ourselves. Those who prefer to process information and experience through the "outer world" are extroverts and those who prefer the "inner world" or to process information and experience inside themselves are introverts.

Anything information that follows that is in italics, is from From "Do What You Are" by Paul Tieger and Barbara Barron-Tieger. It is a great book and I highly recommend reading it!

Because they focus their energy in opposite directions, there are clear, distinct, and profound differences between Extroverts and Introverts. Extroverts focus their energy and attention on the world outside of themselves. They seek out other people and enjoy lots of interaction, whether one on one or in groups. They are constantly (and naturally) pulled to the outer world of people and things. Because Extroverts need to experience the world to understand it, they tend to like alot of activity. Extroverts get their "batteries charged up" by being with others and usually know a lot of people. Because they like to be at the centre of the action and are approachable, they tend to meet new people frequently and with ease.

Introverts focus their attention and energy on the world inside of themselves. They enjoy spending time alone and need this time to "recharge their batteries." Introverts try to understand the world before they experience it, which means a lot of their activity is mental. They prefer social interaction on a smaller scale - one on one or in small groups. Introverts avoid being the centre of attention and are generally more reserved than extroverts. they prefer to get to know new people slowly.

So which are you an Introvert or an Extrovert? Maybe you are a bit of both? This book also offers a quiz to help determine where on the I-E scale you are.
These questions indicate how you prefer to interact with the world. Answer these 9 questions by choosing either A or B and tally up your totals.

1A Are energized by being with other people
1B Are energized by spending time alone

2A Like being the centre of attention
2B Avoid being the centre of attention

3A Act, then think
3B Think, then act

4A Tend to think out loud
4B Think things through inside your head

5A Are easier to "read" and know; share personal information freely
5B Are more private, prefer to share personal information with a select few

6A Talk more than listen
6B Listen more than talk

7A Communicate with enthusiasm
7B Keep their enthusiasm to yourself

8A Respond quickly; enjoy a fast pace
8B Respond after taking the time to think things through; enjoy a slower pace

9A Prefer breadth to depth
9B Prefer depth to breadth

Did you have more 'A's or more 'B's? More 'A's means you tend to be more extroverted and more 'B's means you tend to be more introverted.

Blog Question for Extroverts and Introverts

So how does your E or I effect how you look for work? Does it make looking for work easier or more difficult? Think of how you have gotten jobs in the past, what steps did you take to land the job?

One of the most unusual pieces of advice I ever gave a client was to tell her to go shopping! Our conversation started when I asked how she had gotten her last few jobs. We had a discussion and discovered that the last 2 out of 3 positions she was offered while shopping. She is an extrovert who was out talking with the people in the stores. She had her regular places she enjoyed shopping, which often indicates a good personality/values fit, and they appreciated her demeanour and product knowledge she displayed while in their store. So we decided she needed to go shopping so she could find another job but I am not sure how happy her husband was with me!

In another situation, a client revealed she was offered jobs while conducting an information interview. As an introvert job searching one-on-one was more comfortable for her. How does your preference for making decisions effect your job/career search?
